During long periods of cold weather, ice may build up on your heat pump. This is completely normal and not a sign of a malfunction. To prevent excessive frost accumulation, your heat pump will periodically activate its defrost cycle to clear the outdoor coil.
When defrost mode is activated, the heat pump temporarily reverses its operation, entering a cooling cycle that directs warm air through the outdoor coil to melt the frost. The cycle continues until the outdoor coil reaches a set temperature, as determined by your heat pump’s controls. During this process, depending on your heat pump’s capacity, heating and hot water may be temporarily unavailable.
Homely and Your Defrost Cycle
The defrost cycle is fully managed by the heat pump and is typically configured by your installer during setup. Homely does not control or interfere with this process. If you have concerns about your defrost cycle, we recommend contacting your heat pump installer for assistance.
