# Homely and Legionella Protection Cycles
**Legionella Protection Cycle**
A Legionella protection cycle is a routine process designed to prevent **stratification** in your hot water system and eliminate **Legionella bacteria**. This cycle raises the water heater temperature and circulates the hot water throughout the system, ensuring Legionella cannot survive. This process is particularly important as heat pumps typically heat water to lower temperatures than traditional systems.
**Homely and Your Legionella Cycle**
Legionella protection is **managed entirely by the heat pump** and is usually set up by your heat pump installer during installation. **Homely does not control or interfere with this process.** If you have any concerns regarding your Legionella protection, we recommend reaching out to your heat pump installer for assistance.
